Island Biosecurity
With Islands being so important for species and ecosystems we need to make sure they stay free of pests!
Invasive mammals are the biggest threat. To date invasive rodents are responsible for the most extinctions and ecosystem changes on islands but invertebrates, reptiles, weeds, fish, fungi and disease also pose a threat.
Island biosecurity is a mindset as much as it is a rulebook. At the moment I step on, or off, the boat, do I have any pests with me? Everyone can play their part to ensure precious islands are protected.
There’s a few important principles for Island biosecurity.
It’s easier to stop pests before they get to islands.
It’s everyone’s responsibility.
Talk about biosecurity regularly.
Plan and allow time to clean and check gear and supplies for pests.
Detect any pests early.
Eliminate pests before they establish a population.
Even though we can’t identify all of the pests, avoiding risk goods such as any soil, plants, landscaping supplies or any dirty vehicles or gear will significantly reduce the risk.
